Although he taught in the early 13th Century in Old Japan, Dogen Zenji respected, included and invited women most enthusiastically to become masters of Zen. He also included historical women practitioners, saints and everyday women followers in the context of various teachings. His expression, "someone," or "anyone," was always meant to be gender-inclusive. Dogen quotes Joshu (in the Gyoji) as saying, "If I meet someone who is superior to me, even if she is a seven-year-old girl, I will ask her for the Way, and even if he is a hundred-year-old man, if he is my inferior, I will teach him." | ************
Recommended Introductory Texts: Moon in a Dewdrop and Enlightenment Unfolds (Dogen translations by Kazuaki Tanahashi)
Flowers of Emptiness (Dogen translations by Hee-Jin Kim)
