Quilt Notes: YREKA is another way of spelling Eureka! According to the dictionary definition, the expression derives from the Greek εὕρηκα‘ (heurēka), that is, 'I have found it,’ said to have been uttered by Archimedes when he hit upon a method of determining the purity of gold. Nancy Cabot (April 30, 1936) adds her own perspective from quilt history:
"Most of the older quilt patterns have migrated from east to west, but YREKA SQUARE reverses the tradition and comes from a famous mining town of Yreka, California, in the days of the Forty-niners. The original coverlet was used as an all-over design, with the small prints set in the block on the diagonal, and the solid colors in contrasting color forming pairs of squares. It is a simple and easily pieced block and one of those patterns originally designed to utilize old dresses and scraps for much needing covering."
A lovely, simplified variation is worth a look also in Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS (#2942). Compare the dynamic energy of this block with WHIRLING SQUARE.
