Quilt Notes: Romantic meetings on a bridge are traditional in Japanese poetry, and the fabrics here for Y-BRIDGE are keyed to such an interpretation. The design is not listed in ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT PATTERNS, but is included in Maggie Malone's 500 FULL-SIZE PATCHWORK PATTERNS, with templates. For online cutting and piecing instructions see, World Wide Quilting.
An exquisite poem (perhaps spoken from a bridge) by Lady Ise (10th c., Japan), and translated in WOMEN POETS FROM ANTIQUITY TO NOW, (Aliki and Willis Barnstone, 1980), says:
If it is you, there
In the light boat on the pond,
I long to beg you,
Do not go, linger a while
Among us here in this place.
