Quilt Notes: WINDBLOWN STAR is a variation in name only of WINDBLOWN SQUARE (also similar to BALKAN PUZZLE, but with a different dark and light arrangement). See CARRIE HALL BLOCKS by Bettina Havig, American Quilter's Society, 1999. Online, see browse cut and assembly instructions for Windblown Square. The Nancy Cabot Chicago Daily Tribune column in February, 1933 dated the design back to the 18th century, as illustrated left...her notes state the following:
"The earliest actual trace of the WINDBLOWN STAR pattern was in a little quaint seaside town in Maine, where and old quilt of this design, an example of exquisite needlework, placed in 1778 was found. The blue of its blocks was faded, of course, but if anything, its sentimental and antique value is enhanced."
