Quilt Notes: Here is a version of the basic "X" aligned, repetition of triangles WILD GEESE design, for instance see Nancy Cabot's WILD GOOSE CHASE (Chicago Tribune, May 21, 1933) illustration left. But the new pattern is here transformed into more of a simplified rendering. An ingenious and lovely design, indeed, from Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS, #2029 — the block would seem to illustrate a small flock of geese turning in mid-air, maybe following the bend in a river.

Ruby McKim's syndicated column in 1929 also worked out a pattern similar to this one — or maybe, somewhere in between Cabot and Malone. See Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT DESIGNS, #2796. McKim's designs were republished also in 101 PATCHWORK PATTERNS in 1931 (later republished by Dover). The extensive bibliography at this site provides sources for more detailed info for these and a wide variety of copyright-free, quilt related, geometric designs.
