VORTEX Piecing Grid
Quilt Notes: VORTEX represents a spiraling whirlpool of water or air, along with associated ideas and images, such as time tunnels (blackholes or wormholes) in science fiction. An exquisitely designed geometric over-all pattern (see the tiling below!!), this version of VORTEX is illustrated in Maggie Malone's 500 FULL-SIZE PATCHWORK PATTERNS, 1985, p.23. However, like TO MARKET, TO MARKET, another ingenius design, it does not seem to be included in Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PATCHWORK QUILT DESIGNS, or Jinny Beyer's QUILTER'S ALBUM OF PATCHWORK PATTERNS, or Judy Rehmel's QUILT ID BOOK, and so we might assume it is original to Maggie Malone.

For other "whirling" patterns at this site, see the impossible WHIRLING ARCHES, and also SPINNING TOPS; for a science fiction pattern, see FLYING SAUCER, and for more time travel, how about SPINNING HOUR GLASS.
