Quilt Notes: VORTEX represents a spiraling whirlpool of water or air, along with associated ideas and images, such as time tunnels (blackholes or wormholes) in science fiction. An exquisitely designed geometric tiling pattern (scroll below), it is illustrated in Maggie Malone's 500 FULL-SIZE PATCHWORK PATTERNS, 1985. However, like TO MARKET, TO MARKET, it does not seem to be included in Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PATCHWORK QUILT DESIGNS, or Judy Rehmel's QUILT ID BOOK, and may be original to Maggie Malone.
