Quilt Notes: TRIPLE SQUARE is a relatively new quilt pattern, based on an ancient Chinese coin, that is, the disc with a square in the center. It is that type of coin that is used traditionally in consulting the famous I Ching oracle. If you would like to throw the coins online, see the Cafe au Soul site and its amazing I CHING interface, and ask for some advice on something meaningful in your life: the answers are always challenging and somehow fortuitous. Compare at this site with CHINESE COIN as an abstraction.
TRIPLE SQUARE was illustrated by Kei Kobayashi in her book, 520 QUICK AND EASY PATCHWORK DESIGNS (1993).
There is a beautiful, unexpected element to the tiling pattern you will see below, and assuming the larger circle is arranged so the print fabric matches up in some way so as to allow the design to dance across the divide. In a sense this block relies more on the power of the circle than the squares, which seem less dominant because they tend to meld into the perimeter. The title reminds the viewer that there are indeed three squares at work here, not just the circles, thereby making the title more interesting than it might seem at first. Compare the naming with TWENTY TEES.
