TREASURE CHEST

TREASURE CHEST
(Piecing Grid)

Quilt Notes: This is Maggie Malone's variation on the 9-patch block, TREASURE CHEST (as illustrated in 5,500 Quilt Block Designs, #239). The usual practice is to add an additional square (of a different fabric) in the center of the diamond. The pattern dates back to the Old Chelsea Station Needlecraft Service, published under the name, Alice Brooks, in the Detroit Free Press, 1934, according to Jinny Beyer's QUILTER'S ALBUM, p.264-8. See also Barabara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT PATTERNS, #1638.

The small hovering triangles pointing inward provide an unexpected complexity to an otherwise straight-forward design. The addition of the fabric fill here adds some bountiful detail, and therefore seems appropriate to illustrate the multiple items one would expect as part of a treasure chest.

Designs at this site with interesting themes on hopes and dreams of happiness include, for instance:
WISHING RING
    WEDDING QUILT
GOLDEN STAIRS
    BIRDS IN THE AIR
HOME TREASURE
    PROVIDENCE
LADIES' DELIGHT
    SUNSHINE AND STAINED GLASS
DOVES IN THE WINDOW
