Quilt Notes:
TALL PINE TREE, also called TALL PINES, was included by Nancy Page (aka Florence La Ganke) in her syndicated column on June 4, 1940. But her illustration is somewhat confusing since it doesn't seem to tile (see her illustration left). The version offered above was included by Maggie Malone in her compendium, 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS, #5177, and her sample does repeat quite beautifully, see upper right and how lovely it tiles below, itself creating a veritable forest. Regarding assembly of the pattern, Nancy Page states the following:
"In an allover pattern which is to be used to a quilt for double bed, the amount of material which is required is approximately nine yards. The top is ninety inches wide and one hundred and six inches long." [...] One quilter "thought she might make the tree tops in two shades of green, a light and a medium shade and then use brown for the tree trunks. No seams are allowed in the pattern as given. Therefore the pattern is traced onto lightweight cardboard, then cut out and laid onto the goods. With a sharp pencil the outline is made right on the cloth. Then in the cutting, an allowance of 1/8 of an inch is made on all sides. This becomes the seam when the pieces are sewed togther. They are seamed right on the pencil lines."
