SQUARE DANCE (drafting grid) |
Quilt Notes: There are several SQUARE DANCE quilt designs, each quite interesting geometrically, but this is the only one that actually seems to make the square "dance." Another pattern with a similar name, but without the secondary folk meaning, is DANCING CUBES. The naming of quilt designs is a magical art, it requires not just a marvelous play on geometric terms, but also needs to pick up a "feel" for the design itself in terms of what the visual elements express. The fabric choices and colors then have something to work with, which is native to the block, and therefore more substantial to illustrate. This version of SQUARE DANCE, is quite recent, dated 1990 (Quilter's Weekly), according to Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS (# 2198).
