Quilt Notes:
There is definitely a sense of snowflake in the pattern. But if you looked inside a snow crystal, it wouldn't look the same. Even so, nature is packed with fascinating geometry certainly like this. Here, the quilt design, SNOW CRYSTAL, is a symmetrical, 30-sided polygon, called a "triacontagon." The star inside the crystal is an 18-sided polygon, called an "octdecagon." How's that for something different!! In addition, there are a total of 12 hexagons rimming the perimeter of the pattern.
In her notes in the Chicago Tribune, published March 20, 1934, Nancy Cabot states the following:
"Here is a favorite among our English sisters as well as among American women. In early New England days the diamond was used in making "best quilts," and the combination of diamond and hexagons makes a good looking quilt that is used only for "state occasions."
Compare with other quilt designs which create a variety of interesting polygons in the tiling pattern or in the design itself, for instance:
GRANDMA'S SURPRISE (octagon)
ARROWHEADS (dodecahedron)
BLOCK STAR (dodecahedron)
JAPANESE FLOWER (irregular dodecagon)
BEAUTIFUL STAR (dodecagon)
MORNING PATCH (octagon)
SQUARE UPON SQUARES (hidden octagon)
GEORGETOWN CIRCLE (irregular octagon)
AUNT PATSY'S PET (irregular octagon)
