Quilt Notes:
Nancy Cabot would seem to be an astronomer at heart. Look through her titles (see CABOT BLOCKS) and you'll notice all sorts of planets, moons, suns and star names, along with various celestial oddities such as AURORA STARS, BLUE METEORS, HALLEY'S COMET, NORTHERN LIGHTS, JUPITER'S MOONS and this exquisitely charming, SATURN'S RINGS. Cabot debuted the block on May 28, 1937, with the following comments:
"There is an interesting celestial flavor to this lovely pieced block, SATURN'S RINGS, and it is the second quilt of a similar name to come to light within the last year. These two blocks, RINGS OF SATURN and SATURN'S RINGS, are rather difficult to piece, but the beauty of the finished coverlet is on a plane with the planet for which it was named."
In terms of difficulty, notice that the circle diameter of the curved pieces equals the width of the block — once that is determined, the pattern is easy to draft, although circles are always a challenge in piecing. For humor and playfulness, the design has a distinct, rabbit-like personality, especially the rendering upper right.
