Eva Zeisel, Basketweave
BASKETWEAVE: Ceramic Bowls
by Eva Zeisel (1906-2011)
Quilt Notes: The famous ceramicist, Eva Zeisel (1906-2011) added this timeless, "over-and-under" basketweave design to her exquisite, pink and gold kitchenware, as illustrated left. The same basic quilt pattern is called SALUTE TO LOYALTY, according to Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT PATTERNS (see #211 in the rectangular block category). The two designs are exactly the same layout except that the overlay in SALUTE TO LOYALTY is pieced with a different fabric than the crossbar below it, but the variation works quite well surprisingly (requires a 4-block tiling pattern, in order to stagger the blocks, see also the repeat below).

Although the assembly of SALUTE TO LOYALTY is a bit complicated, nevertheless it is well worth it, because the block creates a very interesting and rare variation in the weave!! The design debuted in print in the Kansas City Star, April 7, 1943. For another pattern at this site celebrating the ceramics of Eva Zeisel, see: LIGHT AND DARK.
