Vintage steam engine fabric
with memorabilia.
Quilt Notes: There are usually a number of novelty quilt fabrics available at quilt fabric stores online, which utilize interesting vintage train and locomotive designs, as well as toy trains —sections of which might also be appliquéd, as illustrated below from a Riley-Blake fabric.

There are quite a number of different patterns called RAILROAD CROSSING: Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS has ten of them, this one (dated back to the Ladies Art Company Catalog, #67) in Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT DESIGNS (#2337) is one of the most interesting. Compare at this site with UNDERGROUND RAILROAD.

The uniqueness here of the triangles moving in one direction across the other diagonal, instead of rotating and therefore not symmetrical, is what makes the pattern so fascinating to assemble with prints and solids. Have a look at the tiling pattern below, which continues the train tracks from one end of the coverlet to the other.

Listen to the startlingly beautiful sounds of the wheels and horn of an actual Railroad Crossing — mp3 from www.6060.org (the site includes many other fabulous railway sounds!!).
