Quilt Notes: It "gathers no moss," but nevertheless is a very traditional design, with lots of variations in light and dark distribution, which then take on new names. This version is illustrated in Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT DESIGNS (#1727), and dates back to an early edition of the LAC or Ladies Art Company Catalogue, #216, in print in 1895, but the design probably much older. See also Rhoda Ochser Goldberg's variations on full grids in the NEW QUILTING & PATCHWORK DICTIONARY.

Compare with similar nine-patch designs at this site, including PUSS IN THE CORNER and HANDCRAFT, also X-PATCH and the highly simplistic PRACTICAL ORCHARD.
