SELF PORTRAIT WEARING A SCARF by Zinaida Serebriakova, 1911
|
Quilt Notes:
Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS has an interesting variation among her 4-Patch designs, with larger and smaller triangles alternating round the border (#2498), very similar to another pattern titled WHEEL OF FORTUNE (#2499). Jinny Beyer's QUILTER'S ALBUM OF PATCHWORK PATTERNS has 15 different designs called RISING SUN. This one has two versions (see p. 294, #11 and #12) where it is also named WHEEL OF LUCK.
The block, as illustrated by Nancy Cabot (whose real name was Loretta Leitner Rising), debuted on January 20, 1937. Variations of the design darken or lighten the corner triangles. The sun disc in the center can sometimes delineate the pie-like sections of the 8 triangles in some manner (Beyer p. 294-12), or simply begin with an undivided octagon (Beyer, p. 294-11).
The color combination above is adapted from Self Portrait Wearing a Scarf dated 1911, by the Russian artist Zinaida Serebriakova (1884-1967), herself shining forth through the innocence of a young face. Full of enthusiasm it would seem, though with sleep still in the eyes beginning a new day, she delights in painting the gorgeous fabric she is wearing. Serebriakova was still active in the 1960's and even in this portrait there is a sense of durability, suggesting a long and productive life to come.
