QUEBEC (Drafting Grid)
|
Quilt Notes:
QUEBEC, a province in east-central Canada, famous for its Saint Lawrence River, cold climate and long winters, debuted in print in Nancy Cabot's column in the Chicago Tribune on May 21, 1938. Cabot's comments share the following:
"QUEBEC, the lovely and unusual pieced design presented today, is the contribution of Mrs. John Gravelle of Deadwood, S.D. The coverlet made from this pattern was brought from Quebec by her mother and was made many years ago when she lived in the province. The pattern was a general favorite among the Canadians, but the exact historical background of the block is obscure."
There are several variations of the design, depending on the relative size of the interior square. This version is illustrated in Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT DESIGNS, #2567, and where it is compared in construction to DUCK CREEK PUZZLE, along with TRIANGLE ASKEW, mostly because of the tilt in the tiling pattern. Comparative designs at this site set on the diagonal include:
DELAWARE CROSSPATCH
SQUARE DANCE
RADIO WINDMILL
FLUTTERBYE
COLONIAL PAVEMENT
LOTUS BLOCK
