 | Quilt Notes: The above variation of PRACTICAL ORCHARD is illustrated in the QUILTING AND PATCHWORK DICTIONARY by Rhoda Ochser Goldberg, 1988. Another version, offered by Nancy Cabot (see her unusually rough, seemingly rustic drawing left) in the Chicago Daily Tribune, in June, 1934, claims it as an "ideal medium for the beginner."
"Practical orchard" would seem to refer to an old orchard no longer bearing fruit, but which is grafted over so that it bears fruit again. See History of Science and Technology for an article on Luther Burbank's "Practical Orchard Plans & Methods," 1914.
