Quilt Notes:
NEW MOON — entirely pieced (upper left) or with applique (upper right) — is the secondary pattern created by tiling a SNOWBALL variation with the circle in the center, published by Nancy Cabot (Loretta Leitner Rising) in her syndicated quilt column in the 1930's. A similar design is called BASEBALL, PULLMAN PUZZLE, or STEEPLECHASE, but without the diagonal breaks connecting the circles, which is what makes this design so unique. Cabot also featured NEW MOON in her column in April 1938, but with an entirely different applique & pieced design and which Cabot suggests, in her notes, might be used for a quilt also featuring signs of the zodiac.
