 MERRY GO ROUND Op-Art |
Quilt Notes: There are several different historical quilt blocks called MERRY GO ROUND: Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS has seven entries including this four-patch version (#176). Here the incarnation actually is "round," so it is especially striking in combination with the name. It has a certain moon like feel also, suggesting rotating phases. The girl on a carousel horse in the illustration utilizes a beautiful black and white retro fabric. Jinny Beyer (QUILTER'S ALBUM, #334-9) dates the block to about 1965 (Quilt Book, Collection I). For another split circle design at this site, compare with SUNSHINE AND STAINED GLASS.
