Medieval Castle (Piecing Grid)
Quilt Notes: MEDIEVAL CASTLE is a fairly new pattern, even if the title is rather ancient. The block made its debut in Stitch and Sew Quilts in 1985, by Sandra Hatch. It is illustrated by Maggie Malone, in her compendium, 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS (#3344). Malone says she clipped her first quilt pattern in 1958.

A rather mysterious block, it does not seem to be illustrated in any of the other compendiums, probably because they don't include the more modern designs, but it's nice to have this one. MEDIEVAL CASTLE is very reminiscent of a pattern called WILD IRIS, and sitting next to it too, in Malone's collection. Both are wonderfully complex, if you enjoy that sort of challenge.

Other designs at this site celebrating ancient, mystical imagery include:

GOTHIC WINDOWS
    TOWERS OF CAMELOT
MYSTIC STAR
    MYSTIC MAZE
LADY OF THE LAKE
    KNIGHT'S BLOCK
ORIENTAL PUZZLE
    MONK'S PUZZLE
MONASTERY WINDOWS
