Quilt Notes: LEFT AND RIGHT is included in OPTICAL ILLUSIONS FOR QUILTERS, by Karen Combs (1997). It appeared in Nancy Cabot's column on August 27, 1935. Cabot says: "'Left and Right' sounds more like a traffic signal than a quilt pattern. But a quilt pattern it is and a little beauty when finished."
LEFT AND RIGHT can be combined and rotated (see left), so as to create a 3D variation on BEG AND BORROW, also illustrated by Cabot in the Chicago Tribune on November 25, 1937 (not to be confused with LEND AND BORROW).
The overall geometric pattern below creates an illusion of three-dimensional space, as if light and dark were sunlight and shadow. For similar 3D type illusions in other quilt designs compare with:
