Quilt Notes: LEFT AND RIGHT is included in OPTICAL ILLUSIONS FOR QUILTERS, by Karen Combs (1997). It appeared in Nancy Cabot's column on August 27, 1935. Cabot says: "'Left and Right' sounds more like a traffic signal than a quilt pattern. But a quilt pattern it is and a little beauty when finished."|
LEFT AND RIGHT can be combined and rotated (see left), so as to create a 3D variation on BEG AND BORROW, or as Cabot suggests, set together with plain blocks, or as here tiled normally. The overall geometric pattern below creates an illusion of three-dimensional space, as if light and dark were sunlight and shadow. For more illusions in quilt designs at this site, compare with BLOCK STAR, SHIFTING CUBES, and LOG CABIN.
