Quilt Notes: Labyrinths are ancient, interior journey landscapes, where people still today take meditative walks to the center. The pilgrimage involves following a spiraling circuit of some kind — small ones are 4-6-circuit and the larger ones 7-12 circuit, depending on the laps around to the center. A labyrinth is different from a maze because there are no dead ends, if you follow the path you reach the goal without exception, it's not based on privilege, cleverness or heroics, but merely on commitment to the journey itself.
This LABYRINTH is one of the 5-patch blocks, which are themselves interior/center oriented just about always. It may be original to Maggie Malone, the editor of 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS (#2943), a wonderful, historical collection of geometric and other quilt block illustrations in full color.
