| Quilt Notes:
Nancy Cabot's version of IDLE MOMENTS debuted in the Chicago Tribune on June 4, 1937 (see illustration left).
There are three possible titles for this design, the first two are simply descriptive, that is, CUBE LATTICE, a compressed variation of the pattern which appeared in the late 19th c. Ladies Art Company Catalogue, also CUBES AND TILE, which means the same thing. Finally Cabot's title here, a wonderfully poetic and upbeat name: IDLE MOMENTS. And what a perfect reflection of the pattern, that name would seem to be, with so many different facets, geometrically full of moment to moment integrity.
Beyond geometry, for a delightful image of an idle moment in real life, there's a famous poem by Emily Dickinson, celebrating the idleness of the June bee, she says:
His Feet are shod with Gauze —
His Helmet, is of Gold,
His Breast, a Single Onyx
With Chrysophrase, inlaid.
His Labor is a Chant —
His Idleness — a Tune —
Oh, for a Bee's experience
Of Clovers, and of Noon!
