 | Quilt Notes: The 'hidden square" in fabric patterns, wallpaper and quilt designs is the square or rectangle which repeats itself, creating often surprisingly different designs than is evident in the single block or tile. The square upper right in these examples is the "repeat" which is tiled to produce the "over-all" patterns in the larger triangles.
The block is offered in Jinny Beyer's QUILTER'S ALBUM OF PATCHWORK PATTERNS (rather mysteriously) without a source or date, making it all the more interesting. In addition the block seems to be unique to Beyer's collection, listed in her 2 x 2 Base Grid Category, p. 56-5. Alternating fabrics and colors can produce some fairly complex results, however, see the tiling design below.
