Quilt Notes: One of a wide variety of quilt blocks called HANDY ANDY. Almost all include a diamond and square, in some combination in the center, and most drafted on a 10 x 10 grid. This one appears in the full color 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS (#2816), by Maggie Malone, and in Judy Rehmel's QUILT ID BOOK (#2469). It is also included in Barbara Brackman's ENCYLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT DESIGNS, but under the name, HOME TREASURE (#2927), a late 19th century block, from the Ladies Art Company Catalogue, #114.
Geometrically, a very simple and straight-forward design, "Handy Andy" is another name for a handyman or "Mr. Fix It." For more do-it-yourself, quilt block names at this site, see KITCHEN WOOBOX, LOG CABIN, and SCRAP BAG. See also the sound alike, HAZY DAZY.
