Quilt Notes: "GOTHIC WiNDOWS is illustrated by Maggie Malone in her 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS (#4054). It is similar to DUTCH ROSE, also called MARTHA'S CHOICE, and SPRING BLOSSOMS. The major difference is a redistribution of dark and light and a stronger accent on the heart shapes, rather than a more flowery pattern (see piecing grid below) — the design appears to be unique to Malone.
«« The colors for the illustrations above were inspired by the German 12th c. Gothic mystic, Hildegard of Bingen's SELF PORTRAIT, detail illustrated left.
Jinny Beyer's QUILTER'S ALBUM has a lovely variety of blocks utilizing clover or heart shapes (see p. 389). Also there are a number of quilt blocks with similar titles, including CATHEDRAL WINDOW(S) and CHURCH WINDOW(S) and DOVES IN THE WINDOW though with very different patterns.
There is a strong sense in this pattern of the ribbing of a stained glass window, compare with SUNSHINE AND STAINED GLASS (also unique to Malone). Or the original block may easily have been inspired by a design witnessed in the architecture of an old chapel or cathedral.
