Little Girl in a Garden by Berthe Morisot
LITTLE GIRL IN A GARDEN (detail)
by Berthe Morisot (1884)
Quilt Notes: GIRL'S JOY was introduced into quiltdom in 1897 in the Ladies Art Company Catalogue, #238. See Jinny Beyer's QUILTER'S ALBUM (p.228-1) and Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA (#2191), where it is located in her section titled, "Unequal Nine Patch with Large Center Square."

Nancy Cabot illustrated this block twice in 1934 and 1937 (the second time with an alternate name, MAIDEN'S DELIGHT). A variation on the pattern illustrated by Carrie Hall (1935) utilizes much wider bands in the cross-pieces. A photo of the original Hall block is online here (new window). The short, corner diagonals in GIRL'S JOY seem extraneous until the design is tiled, where it shows off its marvelous intersecting paths, little playgrounds and flower beds (see below).

The colors selected for the solid color version, upper left, were inspired by impressionist Berthe Morisot's (1841-1895), painting called LITTLE GIRL IN A GARDEN.
