 Garden Wall as Yin-Yang |
Quilt Notes: GARDEN WALL, also called OLD GARDEN WALL — is illustrated as #132b (p.25) in Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT PATTERNS in her section titled "One Patch Patterns." The design is also included in Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS, see #5420. The earliest example of this type of "brickwork quilt" dates back to the Ladies Art Company Catalogue, 1898 (see, for example, #293).
The garden in this case, however, may be creation itself, or the Great Ultimate. This variation of the pattern, repeats itself in reverse, on opposite ends of the block, top and bottom, yin and yang, dark and light, and thus includes the idea of the 'seed' which inspires or plants its opposite and is therefore magnificently appropriate for a garden.
