Quilt Notes: FOUR WINDS is illustrated in Judy Rehmel's THE QUILT I.D. BOOK: 4,000 ILLUSTRATED AND INDEXED PATTERNS, published by Prentice Hall, but without templates. The design first appeared in the NANCY CABOT syndicated column, written by Loretta Leitner Rising, published in the Chicago Tribune in the 1930's, according to Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT PATTERNS.

In Greek mythology the Four Winds are:

(1) Boreas (Aquilo) the north wind, bringer of cold winter air;
(2) Notus (Auster) the south wind, bringer of the storms of late summer and autumn;
(3) Zephyrus the west wind, bringer of light spring and early summer breezes;
(4) and Eurus (Favonius) the east wind.

Ourania was a mountain goddess of summer, especially mid-summer, as well as Queen of the winds and ruler of the night sky. Aeolus was keeper of winds, the one who let the winds out as commanded by the gods. Compare FOUR WINDS with:
