Spool Grid FORE AND AFT
(Grid for each patch)
Quilt Notes: FORE AND AFT fits beautifully into the wide spectrum of companions and opposites, which provide quiltdom with such interesting geometric shapes and design names. It first appeared in Nancy Cabot's Chicago Tribune column on April 5, 1936. The individual patches are the same spool shape emblem simply rotated, called MONKEY PUZZLE. Another block at this site adapting a simlar motif is LIGHT AND DARK, more interesting than it sounds, and accompanied by a humorous and fascinating ceramic by Eva Zeisel (b. 1906). Cabot's comments share the following:
"FORE AND AFT is reminiscent of three or four old quilt designs, particularly the old favorite STEEPLECHASE. If it is pieced in blue and white it reminds one of the early New England compass patterns. Made in a color combination of orange and white, it calls to mind the PEELED ORANGE pattern which originated in New Jersey. FORE AND AFT is distinctly individual in a coverlet composed entirely of pieced blocks, because the squares form a series of designs not found in a single block."
