Quilt Notes:
A FLYING SAUCER, as described in the dictionary at Inspired by Dreams, is symbolic of the following:
"Like the dream of Aliens, there is something unfolding that is so ‘foreign’ to you, that you find it hard to identify with. The flying saucer combines this idea with issues of empowerment or moving forward as revealed by vehicles and places of transportation."
Expressed as a children's quilt block or as a fairly elegant design, an interesting aspect of FLYING SAUCER, as illustrated in Judy Rehmel's QUILT I.D. BOOK, is that it can be constructed as a four patch block with octagon (#734, as above), see animation. Or it can be drafted according to the 360° of a circle (#3299). The octagon version can be traced back to Quilters Newsletter Magazine, pub. since 1969, according to Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT PATTERNS (#1300). It has the alternate title of CARNIVAL TIME, according to Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS (#4152, the center opening can vary in size). For a related patten, see VORTEX.
