ANTIQUE GEOMETRIC QUILT DESIGNS * FISH TALES / FANCIFUL FISH
< DESIGN INDEX | BOOKS >
Fish Tales Line Drawing Quilt Notes:
The expression, "FISH TALES" refers to "great big lies" (supposedly Like a fisherman who exaggerates the size of the fish that got away), that is, according to THE FREE DICTIONARY online. And thus the pattern is also called FANCIFUL FISH. In fact it's an amazing "fool-the-eye" sort of design — you can see the fish moving, swimming back and forth in different directions, when the design is tiled — scroll down to see this very amazing and beautiful tiling effect below.

FISH TALES is also illustrated in Rhoda Ochser Goldberg's famous QUILTING AND PATCHWORK DICTIONARY, first published in 1988 (p.136) and like all of Goldberg's designs, outlined on a graph, so you can easily figure out how to draft the pattern (see the simplified illustration left, on an 8 x 8 grid). Have a look also at this same FISH TALES design in Maggie Malone's full-color "5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS," #1600 (p.120), published 2003.
