Quilt Notes: DOUBLE TIFAIFAI (pronounced "tee-fay-fay") is included in Judy Rehmel's
THE QUILT I.D. BOOK: 4,000 ILLUSTRATED AND INDEXED PATTERNS, published by Prentice Hall, 1986, but without pattern templates. It is not listed in Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT PATTERNS.
According to the Hawaiian Tifaifai Collection, Tifaifai is a Polynesian term similar to "quilt," meaning both bedcover, and literally "to patch repeatedly." That Perfect Stitch (Roxanne International) illustrates the "tifaifai" design technique: "A piece of fabric is folded in half, and in half again. The paper pattern is then placed over the folded fabric, pinned securely, and all four layers cut at the same time, using the lines on the paper pattern as a guide."
Illustrations right: tifaifai design called "Breadfruit" compared with the 9-patch DOUBLE TIFAIFAI quilt design.
