Quilt Notes: CROSSES AND LOSSES was first published in the 1898 Ladies Art Company Catalogue (#251), and later became the focus of Nancy Cabot's quilt column, published on October 10, 1934 (see illustrated left), proclaiming its many variations. Exactly the same design had been shared in the Nancy Page's syndicated quilt column, as an 8-inch block, earlier on January 24, 1933. Thus it was a popular pattern and made the circuit of various well-known quilt design sources. Rhoda Ochser Goldberg's QUILTING AND PATCHWORK DICTIONARY also titles this design as FOX AND GEESE (p.140).
The pattern is very similar to OLD MAID'S PUZZLE, except the triangles are rotated sideways.
Cabot's comments state the following:
"CROSSES AND LOSSES, otherwise known as FLOCK OF GEESE, is one of the most prolific of the four patch designs, since many variations and developments of this pattern are found in such blocks as HOVERING HAWKS, TRIPLE X and THE ANVIL... As a matter of fact, CROSSES AND LOSSES was first pieced in the East in 1845."
