Quilt Notes: COUNTRY FARM dates back to the 1897 Ladies Art Company Catalogue #209. Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA has it as a continuous design, rather than a strict tiling pattern (#418). Another continuous layout in Jinny Beyer's QUILT'S ALBUM (p.406-9) shows a variation of the block in the form of a cross. Both Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCKS (#223) and Judy Rehmel's QUILT I.D BOOK (#3051) include COUNTRY FARM, as illustrated here, simply as a Nine-Patch.

An interesting footnote might be added to this block, as regards the look of farm lands as seen from above. The Canals of Mars of course do not exist, they have been proved to be an optical illusion. But a reference was made in a book published in 1906, by Percival Lowell on the supposed Canals of Mars, to the effect that if intelligent life on another planet saw in their telescopes what Lowell called the "Patchwork Quilting" of the "methodical rectangles" of farm lands in the midwest in the United States, it would be absolute proof that there was intelligent life on Planet Earth.

For more patchwork blocks, that might look like farm lands from above, see:
