Quilt Notes: THE COLUMBIA was first published by the Ladies Art Company Catalogue #109, in the late 19th century (facsimile of their diagram left). The interior 6-point star in the design illustrated upper left shows the piecing arrangement, while the addition of the print fabrics in the illustration upper right creates a new variation.
As a 3D pattern, THE COLUMBIA renders the six tumbling blocks identical, and at the same time turning in different directions and catching the light from various angles — the light source being directed from above. The darkest color is therefore always at the bottom, with interesting effects because the pattern is therefore not symmetrical. However, though it doubles itself (the top becomes the bottom), it repeats quite beautifully, see tiling below, and the 2/3 size tile used to create it.
