(Center Medallion Style) WHITE LINE SQUARE (1960) by Josef Albers
|
Quilt Notes: This design is adapted from a black and white illustration of an untitled CENTER MEDALLION style quilt dated to about 1790, according to Jonathon Holstein's THE PIECED QUILT (p. 32). Comprised mostly of squares and a few rectangles, it is entirely random in arrangement, off-center, abstract, and it wears a sash (see animation and tiling), even as a quilt with a single block in the center, though wider than shown here.
The 18th century pattern seems almost a prelude to early 20th Century Modernism, for example WHITE LINE SQUARE by Josef Albers (1888-1976), illustrated left — see more on Albers' color theory at STUDY ART HISTORY. Albers was famous for a long exploration of similar medallion style paintings called HOMAGE TO THE SQUARE. Compare with CENTURY OF PROGRESS at this site.
