Quilt Notes: This Halloween block, CAPS FOR WITCHES AND DUNCES, is illustrated in Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS and is credited to the Kansas City Star publications, (August 15, 1956 — see Jinny Beyer's QUILTER'S ALBUM OF PATCHWORK PATTERNS #312-12). Malone's 500 FULL SIZE PATCHWORK PATTERNS (#272) can provide the templates. See Wikipedia for an interesting article on the history of the "dunce cap."

Notes on drafting the design: there are two different sizing overlays at work in this 4-patch block. The wings each measure 3 + 5 = 8 and the circle in between, 4 + 4 = 8, adding up to 24 x 24 units overall.

The grid divisions on each side are: 3-5-4-4-5-3.

For another nighttime quilt theme, with alternating black and bright fabrics, see NEW MOON and NOCTURNE — also SEVEN STARS/SEVEN SISTERS.
