Wikipedia Box Kite Quilt Notes: Accidental optical illusions, created by a wrapping fractal design in the fabric graphics, made this illustration look like some sort of quilt block creature inhabiting a coral reef. But the red and yellow-green example provides more of a traditional rendering.

BOX KITE is a 9 patch design illustrated in Rhoda Ochser Goldberg's NEW QUILTING & PATCHWORK DICTIONARY, an excellent introduction for beginners in the study of quilt blocks, especially for the geometrics (since her examples all include the original drafting grid, at times absolutely invaluable), and with plenty of help on creating your own templates also, piecing and finishing and more. The design appears in Judy Rehmel's QUILT ID BOOK, but without a name (#1574). It is similar in structure to SPLIT NINE PATCH, or CONTRARY WIFE, but not identical AND somewhat more interesting.
