"Z-order-curve" fractal, from Wikipedia, used to create the background for the larger illustration above right, but with many more iterations, until the discernible pattern becomes but a delicate texture.

A gorgeous Eight-Point Star, seeming perhaps to require an 8 x 8 grid, but the elemental divisions into three sections of sides and center require a ratio of 3-4-3 (here 6-8-6), so as to open the center to accommodate an octagon, sans compass, to perfection. It's hidden magic, a ratio of 10 x 10, basically a 5 point star grid, with an 8-point star arrangement, just a magnificent geometric form, with enormous impact because of its combination of simplicity and complexity. And of course there are many variations of 8-point stars in quilt designing basically worked out the same way.
Notice how different the BLAZING STAR line drawing (illustrated left) presents the geometric pattern, yet nothing has been taken away or added. It is only the light and dark arrangement that releases the center star independent from the outer ring.
According to Jinny Beyer's QUILTER"S ALBUM (#277-8), BLAZING STAR first appeared in the Ladies' Art Company Catalog (#372) in 1897. Other interesting STAR patterns at this site include:
