ANTIQUE GEOMETRIC QUILT DESIGNS * BEGINNER'S CHOICE

Quilt Notes: BEGINNER'S CHOICE is credited to Laura Wheeler, Sioux City Journal, November 9, 1940, in Jinny Beyer's QUILTERS ALBUM OF PATCHWORK PATTERNS, 2009 (p.145-12). Laura Wheeler is also referenced back to the Old Chelsea Station Needlecraft Service, a mail order company, according to Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT PATTERNS (p.527).

The design is illustrated in Beyer's compendium along with a series of pinwheel patterns, all looking a lot like each other, except for this one, so wonderfully unique and challenging. In fact, the block, though almost comic, is really quite lovable just because of its awkwardness. See also Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS, with a slightly different dark/light distribution, #487.
