Quilt Notes: BALKAN PUZZLE is illustrated in Barabara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Designs, where it is distinguished from WINDBLOWN SQUARE by way of the extra emphasis (in color and darkness) on the inner parallelograms. The design can be flipped (right to left) for all Balkan Puzzle, Windblown Square or WINDBLOWN STAR designs: it varies from quilter to quilter. Brackman traces this block back to Capper's Weekly, 1927, which contained a unique quilt column, authored by Louise Fowler Roote, under the name of Kate Marchbanks.
