Aunt Eliza's Star (4 blocks) | Quilt Notes: AUNT ELIZA'S STAR was published in the Ladies' Art Company Catalog (#13) in the late 19th century — see Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT PATTERNS (#2830), where no fewer than 25 traditional designs begin with the word "Aunt," including, at this site, AUNT DINAH, and AUNT PATSY'S PET, also AUNT MARY'S DOUBLE IRISH CHAIN.
The background upper left imitates the crisscrossing beams of starlight. The rose design in the center of the star, right, is imaging the whole galaxy in microcosm. The distribution of light and dark in this version follows Jinny Beyer's QUILTER'S ALBUM OF PATCHWORK PATTERNS (p. 125-9). Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS (#226) and Brackman's compendium render the eight triangles (which combine as diamonds in the tiling pattern, see left) as the lightest and brightest hue.
