Quilt Notes: ARABIC LATTICE, utilizing a traditional Arabic design, is illustrated with piecing diagram and full pattern templates in CARRIE HALL BLOCKS: Over 800 Historical Patterns, by Bettina Havig, American Quilter's Society, 1999. The design was illustrated in the Nancy Cabot column in the Chicago Daily Tribune, September 24, 1934, where Cabot says it was first pieced in 1880. For another Escher-like tessellation quilt design at this site (alternating the positive and negative of a complex geometric pattern), see PUDDING & PIE. The Carrie Hall block shown above is a 4-patch block, with each individual patch drafted on a 20 x 20 grid, 40 x 40 overall.
For a fascinating look at lots of illustrations for this type of block, see TESSELLATION QUILTS by Christine Porter. See more recommended quilt design BOOKS here.
