Quilt Notes: A somewhat unusual 9 x 9 grid pattern, AMETHYST CHAINS was first published on April 17, 1936, in the Chicago Tribune. The title of Nancy Cabot's column on this quilt states that the blocks of the design are "assembled in chain formation." (See tiling below) Cobot's comments state the following:
"AMETHYST CHAINS is one of the oldest, and perhaps, least known of the many pieced quilt blocks. Made years ago as a continuous quilt pattern, the blocks are assembled to form a series of gold chains, between the links of which are amethysts of obvious sizes and shapes. [...] The quilting done in outline around each single block creates a coverlet, which, once made, never would be sold or given away, but remain cherished by the maker."
