Quilt Notes: Perfectly named, a 9-patch block called ACROBATS, illustrated in Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS (#771). It does not seem to be included in any other of the usual quilt design sources. But it fits Barbara Brackman's definition of a "Sash & Block" design in her ENCYCLOPEDIA, that is, where the piecing occurs in the border or sash and the block is plain. Otherwise, it is similar to TIC TAC TOE (Malone #764) or to CITY STREETS, except for those most beautiful and unusual acrobatic 4-point stars in the intersections. The design also produces some interesting irregular octagons in the tiling pattern (see below). Among many others, just a few astutely named
quilt blocks at this site for comparison:
SHIFTING CUBES
COBWEBS
DOODLE-A-QUILT
SNAKE'S TRAIL
MIGRATION SOUTH
BEACH AND BOATS
BIRDS IN THE AIR
and SYMMETRY IN MOTiON
